3,000 orders are placed for the Toyota bZ7 in just one hour in China.

Toyota just showed that the American vehicle market has been slow to adapt. People will buy a luxury electric car if you price it like a regular car. The bZ7 electric vehicle got more than 3,100 orders in the first hour after it came out in China on April 15. The news has been big news in the business ever since.

The bZ7 is made by Toyota’s GAC joint venture and comes in five trim levels, with prices ranging from 147,800 to 199,800 Chinese yuan, or about $21,500 to $29,000. Those prices are some of the most aggressive Toyota has used in years for a car in the luxury market.

What makes the bZ7 so popular?
The bZ7 isn’t skimping on quality to get that pricing. Toyota worked with Chinese tech companies Xiaomi, Momenta, and Huawei to construct the car’s technology stack. The benefits are clear in the interior and under the hood.

The standard model has a CALB lithium iron phosphate battery with 71 kilowatt-hours of power. A full charge gives it a range of about 372 to 373 miles. The premium model has an 88-kWh pack, which gives it a range of 435 to 441 miles, depending on the supplier. Both variants enable 3C rapid charging, which can provide 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging time.

The navigation system is based on Momenta’s light detection and ranging platform, and the cabin has a LiDAR system on the roof that lets the car drive itself on highways. The inside has a refrigerator and front seats that are supposed to feel like zero gravity and have massaging functions. The premium version also operates on Huawei’s HarmonyOS 5.0 and has the company’s DriveONE motor technology, which has a power rating of 207 kilowatts.

How the bZ7 does in a crowded market
The market for electric cars in China is one of the most competitive in the world. BYD, Xiaomi, Zeekr, and a Tesla Model S that starts at more than four times the bZ7’s base pricing are already in the same space as Toyota. The bZ7 has more luxury features for the money than most premium sedans.

The car is around the same size as the Tesla Model S, and it directly competes with the BYD Han and Zeekr 001 in terms of both technology and price. Availability is where it falls short right now. For now, the bZ7 is exclusively available in China, which means that people in the US and Europe can’t buy it.

That truth has caused a lot of anger online. People who commented on the launch said that the same car at the same price would have way more than 3,000 orders in the first hour in the US. The feeling is part of a bigger discourse about the difference between what economical EV technology can do and what Western consumers can now buy.

What this signifies for Toyota’s plan for electric vehicles
The debut of the bZ7 marks a big change for Toyota in how it is handling the switch to electric cars. In the past few years, people have criticised the firm for being more conservative with EVs than its competitors. However, the bZ7 shows that the corporation is eager to fight on both technology and price in one of the world’s toughest marketplaces.

The fundamental concern is whether that goal will eventually go beyond China. The first-hour order statistics show that Toyota made the appropriate automobile for now. In less than an hour, the market verified it.
