The federal government has reduced the price of petrol by Rs0.94 per litre while increasing the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs0.54 per litre, according to a Petroleum Division notification.
Effective Thursday, August 13, petrol will be available at Rs324.98 per litre, while the price of HSD has been fixed at Rs382.79 per litre.
The government continues to impose Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on HSD.
The latest adjustment comes amid continued volatility in international oil markets following renewed tensions in the Middle East. The government had earlier shifted to a daily fuel-pricing mechanism, with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) tasked with determining prices based on international market trends.
Petrol prices remain a major concern for consumers as the fuel is widely used by private vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws and other forms of urban transport. HSD prices, meanwhile, directly affect freight costs, public transport, agriculture, power generation and industrial activity.
Despite the latest adjustment, current prices remain significantly below the record levels reached during the peak of the recent oil shock. HSD had surged to Rs520.35 per litre on April 3, while petrol had climbed to Rs458.41 per litre.
The government had previously been revising fuel prices weekly since March, before moving toward daily adjustments in response to sharp fluctuations in global oil prices.
Petrol and HSD are also among the government’s largest petroleum revenue sources, with combined monthly sales running into hundreds of thousands of tonnes, making changes in their prices significant for both consumers and government revenues.
The daily pricing mechanism has, however, faced opposition from fuel dealers, who have raised concerns about its impact on their operations and indicated that a protest could be considered.
The latest move provides a marginal reduction for petrol consumers but increases costs for diesel-dependent sectors, particularly transport and logistics.
