Sony Makes Major PlayStation Announcement

Sony has officially confirmed that all new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will be available exclusively in digital format, marking the end of physical game discs for future first-party and third-party releases on PlayStation consoles.

The announcement was made in a blog post by Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, who said the decision reflects the gaming industry’s rapid transition toward digital distribution.

“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,” Shuman said.

Sony clarified that games released before January 2028 will continue to be available on physical media, and existing disc-based titles will remain unaffected. After the transition, new games will be sold through the PlayStation Store or via digital download codes available at retail outlets.

The move follows a dramatic rise in digital game purchases over the past decade. When the PlayStation 4 launched in 2013, digital downloads accounted for just 13% of full-game sales. By 2025, that figure had surged to approximately 80%, highlighting the growing preference for downloadable content among PlayStation users.

While digital games offer instant access, eliminate the need to swap discs, and reduce physical storage requirements, the shift is likely to disappoint collectors and gaming enthusiasts who value physical editions. Disc-based games also provide benefits such as easier resale, offline ownership, and reduced dependence on digital storefronts and servers.

For many longtime PlayStation fans, the end of physical game discs marks the close of an era, symbolizing one of the biggest changes in console gaming since the introduction of optical media.
