Former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the visionary leader credited with transforming Qatar into one of the world’s wealthiest and most influential nations, has passed away at the age of 74.
The Amiri Diwan of Qatar confirmed his death in an official statement, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of the country’s “Father Amir” and extending condolences to the royal family and the people of Qatar.
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until 2013 after assuming power in a bloodless palace transition. During his nearly two decades in office, he spearheaded sweeping economic reforms that turned Qatar into a global energy powerhouse by leveraging its vast liquefied natural gas (LNG) reserves.
Under his leadership, Qatar rapidly expanded its international influence through strategic investments, diplomacy, and infrastructure development. He also oversaw the launch and growth of Al Jazeera, helping establish Qatar as a major voice in global media, while the country’s successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup cemented its position on the world stage.
In a historic move in 2013, Sheikh Hamad voluntarily handed over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, marking one of the Gulf region’s rare peaceful leadership transitions.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed deep sorrow over Sheikh Hamad’s passing, describing him as a visionary statesman who played a significant role in strengthening Pakistan-Qatar relations.
Dar said the former emir’s contributions to regional peace, economic cooperation, and the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and Qatar would always be remembered. He extended heartfelt condolences to the Emir of Qatar, the royal family, and the people of Qatar.
