Sir Sam Neill, the celebrated New Zealand actor who captivated audiences in Jurassic Park, The Piano, and Peaky Blinders, has died at the age of 78. His family confirmed that the veteran actor passed away on Monday in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by his loved ones. No cause of death has been disclosed.
In a statement shared on Neill’s official Instagram account, his family said his passing was “sudden and unexpected” but noted that he remained cancer-free following his battle with a rare form of blood cancer.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday, 13th July, in Sydney, Australia,” the statement read. The family also thanked the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their care and requested privacy during this difficult time.
Neill revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of blood cancer, in 2022. After undergoing treatment, he announced earlier this year that he was in remission and cancer-free.
Born Nigel John Dermot Neill on September 14, 1947, in Northern Ireland, he moved to New Zealand as a child and launched an acting career that spanned more than five decades. He first gained international recognition with the 1977 film Sleeping Dogs before starring in acclaimed productions including My Brilliant Career, Evil Angels, The Hunt for Red October, Dead Calm, Event Horizon, The Dish, Peter Rabbit, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Neill achieved global fame in 1993 as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster Jurassic Park, later reprising the iconic role in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion. Television audiences also admired his performances in Peaky Blinders, The Tudors, Merlin, Reilly, Ace of Spies, and The Twelve.
Throughout a career that included more than 150 film and television credits, Neill earned widespread acclaim for his versatility, receiving Golden Globe and Emmy nominations and being knighted in 2022 for his services to drama.
