The Government of Pakistan has announced public holidays on June 25 and 26 across the country in connection with the observance of Ashura after approval from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, the holidays will be observed on 9th and 10th Muharram 1448 Hijri, marking the religious occasion of Ashura.
The notification stated that all federal government offices, institutions, and departments will remain closed during the two-day holiday period. Provincial governments have also been advised to take necessary measures to implement the decision.
Meanwhile, authorities have finalized security arrangements for Ashura across the country. Law enforcement agencies will ensure strict security measures to maintain peace and order during religious processions and gatherings.
Officials said security plans will focus on protecting participants, managing traffic flow, and preventing any untoward incidents during the observance period.
The announcement comes after the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirmed the beginning of Muharram 1448 Hijri following the moon-sighting process. The committee announced that the Muharram moon was not sighted, resulting in 1st Muharram falling on June 17, while Youm-e-Ashura (10th Muharram) will be observed on June 26.
Ashura is one of the most significant religious observances during Muharram. The day commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala, with religious gatherings, majalis, and processions held across Pakistan
