Iraqi authorities have recovered 375 kilograms of gold during fresh anti-corruption raids based on information provided by former Deputy Oil Minister Adnan Al-Jumaili, who was arrested last month on corruption charges.
According to Iraqi government officials, the latest operation followed intelligence obtained during Al-Jumaili’s interrogation. The gold seizure comes after investigators previously recovered 14 billion Iraqi dinars hidden inside a stormwater drainage system, equivalent to nearly $10 million.
Government spokespersons said assets recovered in Al-Jumaili’s case alone now total 127 billion Iraqi dinars (around $96 million). In addition, authorities have confiscated buildings, vehicles, and gold jewelry worth approximately $24 million, bringing the total value of recovered assets to about $120 million.
Investigators allege that Al-Jumaili accumulated the wealth through kickbacks linked to government contracts while serving in public office.
The recovery is part of Iraq’s sweeping anti-corruption campaign, Operation Dawn, launched after Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi took office in May 2026. Since the operation began, Iraqi authorities have arrested several high-profile officials and recovered nearly $100 million in cash and valuable assets.
The crackdown has also targeted multiple members of parliament, with political immunity revoked for several suspects. Meanwhile, the Iraqi government is preparing legislation aimed at facilitating the extradition of corruption suspects who fled abroad.
